All ferrets love to sleep. On average a ferret will sleep between eighteen and twenty hours a day. They like to conceal themselves, too, in soft, dark spaces. So, you need to provide your ferret with a comfortable area where they can hide and sleep. So, let’s look at soft bedding, sleep sacks and ferret hammocks. Your Ferret’s Cage

There’s a few things to consider when you first bring your new ferret home. The first thing you need to do is to choose the best location for your ferret’s cage. Remember that the place you choose will be where your pet will spend the majority of its time. Make sure that the space is comfy and secure. There are plenty of ferret cages to choose from so be sure to select on that gives your pet lots of room to run around. Get some soft bedding for the cage so your ferret’s home is comfortable and he is not at risk for injury . Consider a ferret cage that has a plastic bottom as they will be easier to clean. Metal-bottomed cages will rust and start to look shabby after several cleanings. However, if you do purchase plastic coated metal make sure that your ferret isn’t chewing the coating off. If they swallow pieces of plastic they can lodge in their intestines. the cage should have several levels as well as large doors. Large doors will prevent your ferret from getting stuck while trying to get in or out.

Supplying a Ferret Hammock

Ferrets sleep between 15 and 20 hours a day, so be sure to purchase some sleeping sacks and hammocks to make them more comfortable. You’ll want to ferret-proof the room as well, as you ferret needs to spend a couple of hours each day outside of their cage.

High quality food is needed to assure your ferret’s health. Make sure the food you have chosen is not made from frozen meat. Find out what brand of food your ferret was eating before you took him home. If you decide to change the type or brand of food, you’ll need to do so slowly by mixing small amounts of the new food with the old one and slowly increasing the new food while decreasing the old one.

Ferrets don’t really need any snack but if you decide to give them treats supply healthy ones such as cooked eggs and meat. Candies or sugary treats will only harm your ferret.

For your ferret to achieve a long life span, the correct ferret diet is essential. Without correct feeding your ferret is at risk for serious health problems. Ferrets developed to become meat eaters and, therefore, require a low fiber, high protein diet in order to flourish. Several years ago the best choice for feeding ferrets was high quality cat food. You can continue to buy high quality cat food for your ferret, however there are lots of different ferret food options available that can supply the combination that your pet requires – high quality fat and low carbohydrates. The correct mix will make it possible for your ferret to achieve a maximum life span.
A correct and balanced diet is critical for a baby ferret. When buying food for your ferret, here’s what to look for: 35-40% protein, 18-30% fat, 2% fiber, 21 amino acids, less than 7% ash and some good carbohydrates like rice flour or brewer’s yeast. Look out for ferret foods that incorporate frozen fish as your ferret won’t eat it. It is not uncommon for ferrets to refuse foods they don’t like until the starve. With a moist diet, the food can only be left out for about forty five minutes and then, if it has not been eaten in that time frame, it should be removed. If you want to have the food available for longer than that, you may want to consider dry pellet food. You can leave dry pellets in your ferret’s cage all day and they are also a good option to help keep your pet’s teeth clean. If you choose a dry pellet diet for your pet, remember that there should also be fresh water available. Ferrets seem to prefer drinking from a dish rather than a water bottle so supply them with fresh water in a bowl. Don’t forget to change the water regularly to keep it fresh and clean.
Treats aren’t necessary for your ferret but they can be helpful when you’re trying to housebreak your pet. Good snack selections are cooked eggs and meats. Avoid any high-sugar fruits or candy as well as dairy products such as ice cream or milk. Furthermore, be sure to avoid nuts or nut products. Any of these things can cause nutritional problems. Health problems that your ferret could encounter include malnutrition, obesity, tooth decay, diarrhea, intestinal blockage, insulinoma and hypoglycemia. Be sure to use treats sparingly so your ferret doesn’t begin to refuse its normal food. A ferret doesn’t tolerate vegetables and grains well, so be sure to avoid them. And, onions should be avoided at all costs as they are poisonous to ferrets.
Making sure your ferret has a healthy diet is crucial in maintaining a long and healthy life. Your ferret will be content, comfy and less susceptible to any life-threatening illnesses. Ferret owners shower their pets with lots of care and affection, but, the kindest thing they can do is to ensure that their pet is fed properly.
