Akeisha wrote to me with some terribly smart questions. I’ve included her letter (and my responses) below:

I do see what you mean if it’s on constantly the dog can soon forget it’s on and then can behave regardless. Ok, so the dog never wears a buckle collar once more? This is what irks me. I wish to be able to manage the dog no matter what collar is on not simply the pinch or it may be no collar in the slightest degree and also the canine still behaves. What if the owner for a few reason flies the collar then they put the buckle collar on for ID but then forget the pinch collar? Then there’s no control.
[Adam Replies] WRONG! The dog gets conditioned. Pop out the collar for awhile. Does not matter.
Does one ever within the training return to the buckle collar once months of what you recommend with a canine that’s happy with doing the commands?
[Adam Replies] Yes, the canine does the command as a result of he’s happy and he likes it. But eventually, there can be one thing that tempts him. This is often where conditioning comes in.
Assume of it like this: You have lived in the identical house for 10 years, right? You stand up in the center of the night and you reach for the sunshine switch that is to the LEFT of the door. Pretty soon, you get conditioned to reach out to the LEFT of the door.
At some point you travel and keep in a hotel. You wake up in the middle of the night and reach out to the LEFT of the door for the switch… while you cognitively saw {that the} switch is on the RIGHT.
In fact, you’ll get up for many nights– perhaps even weeks or months– and still reach out to the LEFT, although the switch is now on the right. Some people will continue reaching to the LEFT for the remainder of their lives. Some can begin getting to the right.
Those folks want to be reinforced. Get it?
Motivational corrections if on the proper dog won’t frighten them or make them hate you I know but aren’t there alternative ways in which except using the collar that will eventually be established thought training that will permit you to take the collar off and have control?
[Adam Replies] Yeah, this means you can take the collar off and have management, ONCE THE DOG IS CONDITIONED. However eventually you may have to go back and reinforce, for most dogs. And positively if you start expecting to figure the canine around new distractions that it’s never been proofed around, such as chickens if the dog has never seen chickens.
Look, I do not create the rules. The canine is not a robot that you can suddenly say, “He’s done” and expect him to act consistently for the remainder of his life. Like all relationship you have with another person, boundaries would like to be established and maintained. The canine is like your wife or husband… they can eventually test you. 
Last query, how can the canine not notice the don’t have it on since it feels a lot totally different than the buckle? Its like my id around my neck at college I have gotten used to it however I do understand when it’s off? Simply for the record I have no downside with pinches, many members in my 4-H club use them and that they work nice on the right dog.
[Adam Replies] As a result of the method you should be using the pinch collar is {that the} canine (since he has restricted reason and logic) does not KNOW that it’s the pinch collar that permits you to provide him smart corrections. But it’s more than the pinch collar. If I place the dog in a range of little yards, with no collar on … and I am ready to chase him down and make him come back to me, if he does not come after I call… then the canine will learn THE UNDERLYING PREMISE that I can make him do it, if he doesn’t. So, the pinch collar and therefore the long line create my job easier, but ultimately, the dog knows (or he thinks a minimum of) that I’m a man of my word and after I tell him to try to to one thing: If he doesn’t do it, I am going to form him do it. And his life can be a heap additional fun if he does it willingly. Therefore the canine starts to extrapolate this principle to alternative commands, too.
