Chicken Can Survive On Water

Can Chicken Swim

In a small village outside of Sussex I have a small farm. Last weekend I was wondering if chicken could actually swim. I know ducks can but I have never seen a chicken swim. I got two swimming pools next to my farm one for the family and one for the ducks. Well the duck one is not really a swimming pool it’s just a pond to be honest. I just wanted to see if chickens can be good at anything else other than running and laying eggs?

So as the lady has done here I did the same thing to one of the chickens. And guess what they do know how to swim but they do not like water at all hence they come out of the water as soon as they can. Also make sure to clean the swimming pool with swimming pool chemicals and swimming pool filters after this little experiment because you need it clean for personal use. I don’t think you would want to swim in a dirty pool?

Yes I know this is a random post but did you ever know about this? May be one or two of you might have known about this but for most people this is the first time they actually knew about it. I also asked my friend, if he knew chickens could swim. He said he did try it once but his chicken started to drown. Thankfully the chicken survived. Though he didn’t realise she was about to lay eggs and she couldn’t swim then.

By the way I am not saying to try this with your chickens and throwing them into a pond. All this post is saying is that chicken can indeed swim. Use the chicken for what they are best at. This article is just informational.

What Chicken Pens Need

A chicken pen is an region or room which is closed off for keeping chickens.  They can also be known as a chicken coops. The amount of chickens that might be  housed inside a chicken pens can vary from one to several thousand.

There is a variety of materials that can be used to build chicken runs depending on the quantity of chickens you are keeping. Different materials may be needed. The most popular material used in making chicken runs is fence wire or chicken gauze wire. Other people also use bricks, poles and wooden planks.

Free movement is essential for chicken to grow well and healthy. There should be enough space in the chicken pen for the chicken to move freely. It should not be too crowded. Laying chickens especially need a lot of movement space. Circulating clean air and sunlight is very important for the good health of the chickens especially for those kept in large numbers to prevent high death rates. Chickens are a great source of meat. It ought to not be surprising that you  will find a whole lot of hungry predators preying on them and their eggs. A  great chicken pen will maintain the chicken protected from these predators.  Examples of such predators are cats, dogs and snakes.

You will find particular functions which are universal to nearly all kind of  pens. These are drinking water holes or drinking water containers, feeding  stations and egg laying nests. Egg laying nests nevertheless might only be  discovered in chicken pens were egg layers are kept. Feeding structures ought  to usually be kept clean, and checked if there’s still an sufficient amount of  food since chickens feed throughout the day. Sufficient amounts of food  stations ought to also be there to ensure that all the chickens will have a  turn to feed. Using the exact same significance is drinking water. The exact  same kind of care should be taken using the drinking water. Drinking water  stations should also be checked frequently. Chickens have to be inside a clean non restrictive atmosphere to grow nicely.  The pens should cleaned frequently. The chicken ought to be built such that  cleaning isn’t difficult, and motion for the drinking water containers and food  stations isn’t as well restrictive for simpler cleaning an elevated floor is  much better as which droppings pass via the mesh for the ground.

It is important for us to try and make our chickens as comfortable as possible because ultimately the goal is to come up with very healthy chicken. In turn they will also be profitable.

How To Build Your Chicken Coops

There are several things to keep in mind when building chicken coops. The first is comfort. Give your chickens room to move around the enclosure, some wing room to make them feel like they are leading a more normal life. Chickens laying habits are highly affected by stress. Happy, comfortable chickens lay more eggs.

Providing more space also helps them feel normal by encouraging their instinct to peck at the ground. Spreading some feed in the morning can also help encourage the natural pecking instinct.

Providing a nesting area that is both safe and comfortable will ensure excellent egg production. The size and shape of your nesting box will be based on your local weather patterns. Ask around and find out what type of box your neighbors have built. Whatever design you settle on, make sure their is plenty of space to lay eggs. Several hen chickens may use the same nest, but they can also be very picky and want their own space. Their main priority is to make sure their chicks will hatch in a warm, protected environment. Keep the nesting area away from the hustle and bustle of the feeding trough.

The best nest is made out of straw. Hay can be a good substitute and, for mature chickens, even some sawdust will do. Beware of wood chips, though. Chicks sometimes can not tell the difference between chipped wood and chicken scratch. They can even die if they eat too many wood chips.

Then there is your own ease of use. The eggs must be easy to collect not only because you will be doing it quite often, but also because it means that you do not unduly disturb the chickens and their nests. By avoiding such disturbance you keep your chickens happy and laying. Maybe you have a box nest, with a few adjoining nesting areas. A hinged lid can work will for this type of nest. If you leave your nesting area open, make sure that you can easily reach into all the corners.

Chickens want to be protected from the elements and also from predators. A strong roof that keeps off the rain and good walls that keep out the wind are necessary. If it gets really cold where you live, make sure you put a heat lamp in the nesting area. Design alone will give the chickens a feeling of security, but you can add to it by placing the coop in an area that is quiet and does not get a lot of traffic.

Now you are ready to go out and build your own coop. Safe secure chicken coops are the secret to happy chickens and happy chickens are the secret to getting more eggs.
